Telephone bills can add up, especially if a person makes a lot of long distance calls. Fortunately, thanks to advancing Internet technology there is an excellent calling alternative when people want to save on long distance. This alternative is called VoIP, (Voice over Internet Protocol). With VoIP voice travels through one’s Internet connection rather than the phone line.

VoIP’s main advantage lies in its extremely discounted price, if the service even charges anything. Free VoIP setups are typically the case when computer-to-computer communication is used, though there are a few computer-to-phone services available that are also free. In a VoIP arrangement where a price is charged, the fee is nominal, though can vary in payment method. For example, some VoIP services will work like a calling card or a prepaid cell phone. Users buy a certain number of minutes, with the amount being significantly higher than what would normally be available through calling cards or prepaid cell phones. Minutes for international calls might be slightly more expensive, but not much more. Other VoIP payment arrangements involve a person paying a monthly or annual subscription fee. These fees can range from $20 to $200, though the average price is around $25. In a subscription arrangement users get an unlimited number of long distance calls.

So, how does one go about finding a VoIP provider? They can start by investigating the VoIP services offered by their Instant Messenger. This is because most of the major messengers, (including Yahoo, AOL and MSN), will allow for some form of VoIP communication. Yet, if a person is not satisfied with what is available with their messenger, they could do a greater search by making inquires on a search engine. The best keywords to use are “VoIP”, “free Internet calls” or “Internet calling.” The quotation marks should be included, since they help tell the search engine to look just for these specific phrases. Alternatively, they could do searches on some of the most well-known VoIP services, such as Skype, Vonage and Ooma.

Once a provider has been found, a person will need to set up their computer for VoIP communication. There are two ways this is done. The first way involves using a microphone or headset for communication. The second way involves getting a VoIP telephone. Both methods work the same way when it comes to setup, at least if a person is using USB versions, (which is the most common format for modern-day computer devices). Anyway, with a USB connection, all a person has to do is plug in the device and it is automatically ready for use. Some additional configurations may need to be done within the VoIP service itself, so that the phone or microphone are detected, but this usually isn’t hard to do.

In conclusion, if a person is interested in saving money on their phone bill, they should look no further than VoIP communication. The service is cheap and pretty much easy to use and set up. The only downside is that sometimes the voice quality is not as good, but this can be greatly improved if a person uses DSL or cable Internet.

By M. Jedediah

VOIP is an advanced technology which has surpassed the telephone companies and the mobile companies. Its popularity is increasing enormously with an increase in its network coverage. It has proved to be an astonishing invention which has created a new mode of telecommunication by using internet. VOIP is an abbreviated form of Voice Over Internet Protocol.

Salient Features Of VOIP

The VOIP technology possesses many salient features which have attracted a large section of people towards itself.

1 - With the introduction of VOIP technology, the making of calls has become easy and cheap. You can easily make local, long distance, and international calls by using a broadband net connection which is a high-speed net connection.

2 - Its one of the significant advantages is the capability of directing the incoming calls to the VOIP service and one can easily get the details of incoming calls from any computer possessing internet by using VOIP system.

3 - It is a network that follows you wherever you go therefore you will never miss any of your important calls even if you are out of town.

4 - It has helped a lot in cost reduction because of the cheap call rates, the monthly telephone bills have cut down. Therefore, setting up of VOIP is very much beneficial economically.

5 - There are many value added services offered by the various VOIP service providers. For example, there is voice mail facility, 3-way conference, speed dialing, call forwarding, simultaneous ring, call waiting, caller ID, call return, caller ID block, anonymous call rejection, an interesting feature of do not disturb, and last number dial. All these services are mostly free of cost in their basic service plan.

6 - There is a facility of managing your VOIP account online from any corner of the world if there is an availability of a broadband internet connection.

Drawbacks Of VOIP Technology

The dark side of using VOIP technology has made the customer to reach the state of dilemma whether to go for VOIP technology or not. The major disadvantage of VOIP is that a problem can be cropped up by using VOIP technology and text messaging because it has been found that the use of this technology can lead to many security flaws.

Experts are working on the problem of security flaws, but have not come to any results yet. Therefore, one cannot rely completely on the use of VOIP technology. In terms of security, VOIP is not also completely supportive for their encryptions. Because of this weak point, it has become easy for the cyber attackers to impede the communication system.

How To Call Without VOIP

It is also very easy to make calls without possessing VOIP service by using an adaptor. This adaptor will be hooked up to a regular phone and to your VOIP in order to utilize the residential VOIP phone which can be a VOIP phone, landline, or cell phone. This adapter has proved to be very much useful for those who do not want to make investment in VOIP service.

Residential VOIP

Residential VOIP is a type of software which permits the downloading of technology on your computer to chat with anyone across the globe. In this system of communication, computer will be solving the purpose of the telephone. There is one specification in using residential VOIP service and that is the person whom you want to contact should also need to possess the software with same technology on his computer.

Therefore, after considering the both positive and negative aspects of the VOIP technology, you should come to an apt and appropriate decision whether to opt for it or not.

The Choices Between Voip Telephone System

By J. Lloyd

The voice over internet protocol (VOIP) telephone system is a great model of how advances in one field of technology often go hand in hand with advancement in other areas. VOIP is an advancement made possible by computer technology that has directly affected phone systems, as well. While this type of phone system may seem foreign to many consumers, most people are aware of some type of VOIP provider, even if they don’t know it. Lingo, SunRocket, and Vonage are three providers of VOIP services that are relatively well known among many consumers.

The difference between a VOIP telephone system and a regular telephone system can be confusing for many people. Traditional phone calls work by sending “analog audio signals” via fiber optics that is provided by a traditional telephone company. The fiber optics is basically a fancy description of telephone lines, while the “analog audio signals” becomes the voices that are exchanged during a conversation. This is how a traditional telephone call works, whether it is over a land based line, or a cellular phone.

The way that VOIP works is that instead of using a system of “analog audio signals” to transmit voices, the VOIP system uses a method that causes it to switch data packets to different channels, depending on which one is the most open at the time. So unlike a regular phone system that has to have a dedicated channel to make or receive calls, a VOIP system can make use of any channel that happens to be open at the time the call is made. For many individuals, as well as many businesses, a VOIP system is cheaper because the method of making calls doesn’t require payment for set lines or an expensive per minute long distance rate.

VOIP saves the most money for individuals who tend to make a lot of long distance calls. The reason for this is that long distance calls with a regular telephone plan have a per minute charge, while that is not true with VOIP phones.

This can make this type of telephone system valuable not only for a family, but also for more and more businesses who are switching over to this system not only because it saves money, but for many types of phone calls the VOIP system is more efficient.

The main concern many people have when considering switching to a VOIP telephone system is that most people think of VOIP as solely computer to computer. This is one type of VOIP phone system, but it is not the only one!

There are phones that are basically ordinary telephones, they simply connect to a computer that’s on instead of getting plugged into a wall. There are also “Wi-Fi” phones, which work like cellular phones but use Internet and wireless hot spots instead of cell phone towers to connect calls.

VOIP telephone system technology is not perfect by any means, but it is highly effective and like all technologies, as it becomes increasingly popular with both homes and businesses the features and service will continue to improve as the new improved phone system replaces the old.

VoIP Switching: Be Sure Of The Costs Before Committing

By Adam Sowden

VoIP is rapidly replacing conventional phone services as the consumer turns to VoIP switching using the Internet to carry their conversations digitally rather than via phone lines. VoIP switching may be revolutionizing the way we communicate, but it is also opening the door to huge savings over traditional phone services. Perhaps your VoIP service may have the same monthly $30 fee, however unlike traditional phone services this can include a number of free features. These may include unlimited and un-timed long-distance calls within the United States and Canada, call waiting, caller-ID and voice mail – all for no additional charge. Whilst this opens the door to significant savings for those making lengthy long distance calls, remember that you are only saving if you use this service already.

Be Clear On The Total Cost To You

Before you switch to VoIP, be sure to identify all of the relevant costs. This will include the cost of both a broadband internet connection and VoIP adaptor to connect your phone to the broadband modem (this encodes your analogue phone signal into a digital signal that can be sent via the Internet.) You may also need to purchase an expandable cordless phone to your system as well as a router to enable you to be online and on the phone at the same time. Finally, you should also thoroughly investigate any associated carrier costs. In most cases, VoIP switching does provide significant savings, although you need to be sure that this is the case for you.

Other costs to be mindful of are Federal taxes that apply to the service, as well as some costs that vary according to your state. It may be useful to budget $5 per month on government taxes. In addition, the service provider will charge you an activation fee and you may also incur a disconnection fee if you cancel the contract within a year. Also be sure to check the rates that apply if you exceed your monthly time/call allowance. You may expect to pay four cents or more a minute for calls exceeding your monthly quota.

VoIP switching can offer great savings to the home and business user, but should be done following a thorough investigation of all costs involved. When tempted by a free trial offer, carefully check the equipment that you may need to purchase, any costs that you may be eligible for and read all fine print to ensure that you fully understand any obligations.

Discover VoIP And Enjoy The New Way Of Communication

By Fruzsina Csery

You’ve probably heard about VoIP technology or Internet telephony. Voice Over Internet Protocol is a new form of communication that enables you to telephone through the Internet for free or at a very low price.

Developers and entrepreneurs have created an industry around VoIP technology in its many forms: desktop applications, telephone services, and corporate phone systems. VoIP is an essential technology that have many aspects.

It seems that many communications firm foresaw the magnificence of VoIP technology, because by this time it is extremely widespread. VoIP is one the world’s fastest growing industries. It almost covers the whole world.

In the last few years we could see a complete revolution in communication world: everybody begins to use PCs and Internet for job and free time to communicate each other and sometimes to talk each other.

VoIP can send voice over the Internet, rather than through the regular telephone network. The point is that analog voice is converted into digital signals (bits) and then backwards. It allows you to make and receive phone calls to practically any number worldwide including landlines, mobiles, international numbers etc.

To the businessman, VoIP is a single technology investment with many revenue streams. To the enterprise network engineer, it’s a way to simplify the corporate network and improve the telephony experience for users of the network. For you, it’s the best way to save money on the terrible phone bill.

And this is what makes VoIP so revolutionary. The big deal is that you can save great amounts on your phone bill, especially if you frequently make calls abroad.

When you are using PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) line, you always pay for time used to a PSTN line manager company: more time you stay at phone and more you’ll pay. In addition you can’t talk with more people at the same time.

But with VoIP technology, you can talk all the time with as many people as you want (the needed is that other person is also connected to Internet at the same time, like here http://www.peneo.com), and as far as you want. What’s more, you can share data with your partners. You can send images, documents and videos while you’re talking. If you run a business, the advantages and the money you can save multiply.

But then, why everybody doesn’t use it yet? Well, the only disadvantages are voice quality and call reliability compared to PSTN. VoIP applications require a real-time data streaming cause we expect an interactive data voice exchange. But this problem is solvable in the close future.

By Michael Brown

Residential Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) enables the home user to use their Internet connection make telephone calls. This advancement has made it possible for many people to have advanced calling features installed on their home phones at little or no extra cost. The cost of calling has also come down by anywhere from one-third to half the cost of conventional telephony service.

Among the many special features that are typically included with a VoIP phone service are caller ID, call waiting, call forwarding, and three-way calling. One of the most important abilities of VoIP is unparalleled number retention. A VoIP phone functions with equal ease regardless of real-world location so long as it is supplied sufficient Internet bandwidth. This is especially useful for users who don’t want to lose a phone number when they move from one city to another. VoIP phones can be configured to receive all facilities that Web-based administration make possible.

A VoIP phone does, however, require a connection to broadband Internet. This is important because anything less does not have the necessary bandwidth to route voice traffic. Lower bandwidth connections will suffer from traffic congestion, which results in a severe reduction in voice quality.

There are hundreds of companies today that are providing residential VoIP phone service. Consumers must consider their needs before selecting one package over another. Fortunately, most service providers offer a variety of packages, making it easy to test the waters with a basic package providing limited usage. Then, if satisfied with the service, the user can upgrade to an unlimited USA and Canada calls package or an unlimited business package. This makes it easy to keep phone bills properly in line with individual needs.

Currently, the leading VoIP companies are AT&T CallVantage, Lingo, Verizon, Packet8, and of course Vonage. All these services come highly rated, so a customer is likely to find them more than adequate to supply their residential VoIP needs. However, there are several smaller VoIP companies that, while charging much lower rates, may have difficulty providing adequate service.

There are, of course, some disadvantages in switching to a VoIP phone. Typically it is necessary to register the address the phone will be at for location identification before it will be possible to make 911 calls. Also, the service is unlikely to work during power outages unless special provisions are made to supply it with another source of power. Furthermore, VoIP services may not offer white page listings, though some customers consider this an advantage.

However, the vast majority of consumers consider these to be minor inconveniences. They are significantly outweighed by the advantages of VoIP. In fact, it may not be wrong to say that the balance is tilted so far in favor of VoIP phones that it will only a question of time before VoIP home phones will replace landline phones altogether.

For most companies and many individuals, signing up with a VOIP service is a no brainer.

For a fraction of what most people pay for a tradional telephone service, you can have a feature rich communications sytem.

But there are a few pitfalls that people fall into time and again. Make sure you aren’t one of them.

1) Missing Out on the Best Deal - So you know that you can make a big saving by switching from your traditional phone carrier to a VOIP service. But did you know that you can also make a huge saving again by shopping around? Some VOIP companies are up to 50% cheaper than others that offer similar featured packages.

2) Taking the Cheapest Without Looking - VOIP beats tradition networks in so many ways. Why not make sure that you have a feature rich package? Again, you need to compare features between companies!

3) Going With the Biggest Names - If you follow the VOIP scene, you will know that some of the biggest names in VOIP have had serious system outages. Make sure your carrier has a history of reliability because you don’t want to be caught without a phone service!

4) Low bandwidth - Make sure that you discuss your WAN service provider to make sure you have enough bandwidth for VOIP. This is really important for heavy users such as businesses and call centers.

5) IP Phones - Poor quality hardware (IP Phones) can really reduce your user experience. Don’t buy the cheapest phone you can find, because you will be disappointed at your call quality.

6) Configure Your Firewall - A lot of people get frustrated when their new VOIP service doesn’t work. You need to check your firewall settings to ensure your VOIP service can operate!

7) Ignore Security - A VOIP conversation is data like any other data. It can be stolen and misused (ie. people can listen to your conversations). Make sure you are aware of the problems by asking your vendor and consider encryption to protect your data.

VOIP opens up a massive potential cost saving to home and business users. It can be as secure and high quality as traditional lines, if you take a little time to research and make the right purchasing decisions.

By Michael Brito

Over the past ten years, the market for VoIP has been driven by a number of factors, chiefly the promise of inexpensive voice communication. As traditional phone service costs have gone up dramatically, without adding new features, any solution offered at lower rates is bound to create demand.

Today, many small and medium businesses (SMB) are choosing VoIP to replace their current telephone system. VoIP is a term used to describe the transmission of telephone calls using a data network, rather than over traditional phone lines. It is a simple concept, and one that is having a significant impact on the world of business communications.

The SMB market for VoIP is growing astronomically across the world as businesses realize that VoIP is now a mature enough technology to deliver high quality service, feature improvements and cost savings.

Low-Cost Broadband Changes the Telephony Game

As VoIP is less expensive to deploy, service providers can pass the savings on to its customers. Since no physical equipment other than a phone and a broadband phone adapter are needed onsite, features can be upgraded without additional charges in a seamless process. Because VoIP has been less affected by regulations and taxes than traditional telephone service, this has also helped keep prices at a minimum.

The explosive adoption of broadband Internet access is aiding VoIP market growth, because VoIP uses these high-speed connections as its transport rather than requiring separate, expensive telephone lines. Since so many potential VoIP customers already have broadband connections and want few features like voicemail to email notification, they see the logical choice is to leave behind traditional phone service for less expensive VoIP phone service.

Also, now that portability of phone numbers is available, switching to a business VoIP phone system can be completely transparent to employees and customers.

VoIP Is the Future

As a result of VoIP’s potential cost savings and added features, consumers, small business, enterprises, traditional telecommunication service providers (telcos), and cable television providers are viewing it as the future of telecommunication. VoIP has experienced significant growth in recent years due several factors:

•Demand for lower cost phone service;

•Carriers drive to reduce costs while providing more features;

•Customers increased feature set without capital investments;

•More dispersed workplace driven by teleworkers and best of breed global hiring practices;

•Improved quality and reliability of broadband networks enabling

•VoIP calls over standard broadband lines, as well as inexpensive increased bandwidth capacity;

•New product innovations that allow VoIP providers to offer services not currently offered by traditional telephone products.

The bottom line for today’s small business is that VoIP can give a business of any size the same kinds of telephony features that multinational enterprises typically enjoy at a lower cost.

By FullService Broadband Provider

We’re hearing a lot about Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) these days. I for one am a big fan of this technology. Did you know that you could actually use VoIP in 3 different ways? That’s right! There are really 3 different ways that you can ‘make the call’. Ok, you can actually receive the call 3 different ways as well.

First up is probably the most popular. I use this way myself and most of the residential providers out there today use this as well. What is it?

ATA – Analog Telephone Adapter

Your normal phone plugs into an ATA that you received from your VoIP provider. This is the most common way to get hooked into VoIP. This device takes care of all the magic that occurs when you make and receive your calls over your broadband connection. Your analog phone signal must be converted to digital to be routed through your broadband connection and this ATA does the job.

IP Phone – Internet Protocol Phones

As the name would imply, these are ‘special’ phones. You wouldn’t know it by looking at them. They look like normal phones. What is different about these phones is the electronics inside them and the fact they don’t take a ‘regular’ phone cable (RJ-11). Instead these phones take an Ethernet cable connection (RJ-45) and also come equipped with the necessary electronics to plug directly into your router.

Computer-to-Computer

This is the oldest and possibly the easiest way to get plugged into VoIP. Here instead of using your normal phone or IP phone to make calls through your broadband connection, you use your computer itself! (You could do this over dial-up, but broadband is certainly better) There are a number of services available that offer no cost or low cost service. You’ll need the software and a microphone to speak into and speakers to hear from and of course your computer and a high-speed internet connection. Some providers offer this service for free when their software is being used on both ends of the call.

Watch out for Wi-Fi (using IP phones) and other advancements in VoIP technology. We truly are on the verge of a major breakthrough in telecommunications. So, what are you waiting for? Make the call!
